The first academic health center in Texas, the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston (www.utmb.edu) has grown from one building, 23 students and 13 faculty members in 1891 into a modern health science center with more than 70 major buildings, more than 3,000 students and more than 900 faculty. On 84 acres, the main campus of UTMB at Galveston includes four schools, three advanced-study institutes, a major medical library, a Level I trauma center and several research facilities, including Galveston National Laboratory, which is the country’s only BioSafety Level 4 laboratory on a university campus. Although not physically on the Texas Medical Center campus, UTMB Health has been a member since 2010 with its offering of an integrated network of hospitals and clinics that provides a full range of primary and specialized medical care.
