Founded in 1962, the Texas Heart Institute (THI) (www.texasheart.org) is dedicated to reducing cardiovascular disease through innovative research and education programs and improved patient care. One of the nation’s Top 10 heart centers, THI experienced the first U.S. heart transplantation by its pioneering founder, world-renowned cardiovascular surgeon Denton A. Cooley, M.D. Located at CHI St. Luke’s Health-Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, THI is affiliated with the University of Texas (UT) System, which promotes collaborative cardiovascular research and education among UT and THI faculty and other UT components.

— SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN–HOUSTON

Located in the Texas Medical Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children Houston (www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org) is a one-of-a-kind health care system that has been dedicated to improving children’s lives since 1922 by providing specialized pediatric care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. Every year, the Shriners Hospitals for Children–Houston provides care at no charge for thousands of children with orthopedic conditions and cleft lip and palate in a family-centered environment and serves as a research and teaching center that provides comprehensive medical, surgical and rehabilitative care to children with orthopedic conditions.

The world’s largest children’s hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital (www.texaschildrens.org) is a not-for-profit health care organization in the Texas Medical Center committed to creating a healthier future for children and women through leading inpatient care, education and research. Consistently ranked as the best children’s hospital in Texas and among the top in the nation, Texas Children’s Hospital is widely recognized for its expertise and breakthroughs in pediatric and women’s health. Affiliated with the Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital includes the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute; the Feigin Center for pediatric research; and the Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, which focuses on high-risk births. The hospital also has Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus and Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands outside the Texas Medical Center. The first member institution to join the Texas Medical Center, The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (www.mdanderson.org) is now one of the world’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. Created in 1941, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is one of the nation’s three original comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Act of 1971 and one of 45 National Cancer Institute–designated comprehensive cancer centers today. Its mission to eliminate cancer through exceptional integrated programs includes education for students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public. Since 1944, more than 1 million patients have turned to M.D. Anderson for cancer care with targeted therapies, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and proton therapy, immunotherapy and more.

— BAYLOR COLLEGE OF MEDICINE
The Baylor College of Medicine (www.bcm.edu) is a premier academic health science center in Houston known for excellence in education, research, patient care and community service. The college is made up of four schools: the medical school, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Allied Health Sciences and the National School of Tropical Medicine, the first of its kind in North America.

Baylor College of Medicine is ranked No. 1 in Texas for National Institutes of Health funding and is co-owner of CHI St. Luke’s Health-Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, which has one of its two campuses in the Texas Medical Center. Affiliated with seven teaching hospitals known for medical excellence, Baylor College of Medicine trains more than 3,000 medical, graduate, nursing, anesthesia and physician assistant students as well as residents and post-doctoral fellows.

— HARRIS HEALTH SYSTEM
A fully integrated, community-owned health care system, Harris Health System (www.harrishealth.org) cares for the residents of Harris County. The first local accredited institution designated as a patient-centered medical home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, Harris Health focuses on delivering primary care, wellness and prevention services through an extensive network of 23 community health centers, five school-based clinics, a dental center, a dialysis center and several mobile health units as well as the 49-bed Quentin Mease Hospital, which specializes in physical medicine, rehabilitation and geriatric programs; Ben Taub Hospital, a world-renowned Level I trauma center with 586 licensed acute-care beds; and the 328-bed Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital with a Level III trauma center distinguished for its neonatal intensive care for high-risk deliveries. Annually providing more than 1.9 million outpatient visits, Harris Health is a teaching system for Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), working hard to train health care professionals to positively impact the community.
