— TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER
Founded in 1945, the Texas Medical Center (TMC) is the world’s largest medical complex. Sitting at the forefront of advancing life sciences, it is home to the brightest minds in medicine and nurtures cross-institutional collaboration, creativity and innovation to push the limits of the possible. Known as the country’s eight largest business district, TMC encompasses more than 50 million developed square feet on more than 1,300 inside Houston’s Loop 610. By its sheer size and community presence, TMC is a geographical reference point in the city of which many neighborhoods are considered a part, including the Lower Montrose neighborhoods, Southmore, Southgate, Southampton, Boulevard Oaks, Broadacres, the Museum District, West University Place, Sunset Terrace and Collegeview, Old Braeswood, the Braeswood Place neighborhoods, Linkwood, Knollwood, Meyerland, Willowbend and Willow Meadows. Also associated with TMC are several master-planned communities just southwest of Houston in the Pearland area and into Brazoria County on State Highway 288; these include Silver Lakes, Lakes of Savannah, Shadow Creek Ranch, Sterling Lakes and Rodeo Palms.

— MONTROSE
Probably the most bohemian of all Houston neighborhoods, the Montrose area attracts established as wells as up-and-coming artists. Rich with cultural and ethnic diversity, the Montrose neighborhood originally was platted in 1911 and developed by J. W. Link of the Houston Land Corporation. Traditionally a Bohemian artist area, Montrose has seen a sharp rise in property values since the 1980s as Houstonians have moved back into town.

Montrose today is a polyglot with graceful old mansions, arts and crafts bungalows, new townhouses and patio homes, duplexes, apartments, shops, a university, world-class museums and fine restaurants. Each Montrose neighborhood has a unique characteristic. The gated Courtlandt Place has fine early 20th-century homes with every one registered in the National Register of Historic Places. Westmoreland Place and Avondale offer historic old mansions as well as new construction and multifamily housing. Cherryhurst has a small Southern-town atmosphere with a park and Houston’s historic Woodrow Wilson Elementary. The most diverse of the neighborhoods, Hyde Park is home to traditional retail and new wave shops, trendy restaurants and clubs, remodeled bungalows, upscale new-construction patio homes and townhomes, lofts, and multifamily complexes. For a more traditional neighborhood, Winlow Place has mostly two-story brick homes, tall trees and wide streets surrounding Lanier Middle School. The area’s diverse and sophisticated urban personality includes some of Houston’s most exclusive shopping along W. Gray, and its restaurants rival or surpass others in the city. Montrose also boasts a number of fine museums, including The Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel, the Holocaust Museum and the Byzantine Chapel of the University of St. Thomas.

— UPPER KIRBY

Considered west of South Shepherd Drive, east of Buffalo Speedway, north of Bissonnet Street and south of Westheimer Road, the Upper Kirby Management District (officially Harris County Improvement District #3) was created by the Texas Legislature and governs the Upper Kirby area. This upscale, diverse urban neighborhood features vintage and recent single-family homes, townhomes, luxury high-rises and apartments interspersed with high-end retail and trendy restaurants. Defying regional norms, Upper Kirby residents can walk nearly everywhere within their neighborhood, which features old-fashioned red English telephone booths on several corners.

— RIVER OAKS
One of Houston’s most exclusive residential neighborhoods, River Oaks was developed in the early 1920s by Mike and Will Hogg and Hugh Potter. River Oaks became famous for impressive homes designed by renowned residential architects. The most famous house, Bayou Bend, was a collaboration by Staub and Briscoe for the Hoggs’ sister, Ima, an early and exuberant collector of American antiques. Her home, now part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), houses the Bayou Bend Collection, a premier resource for American decorative arts. Today, River Oaks is around 1,100 acres bordered by Buffalo Bayou on the north, San Felipe or Westheimer to the South, South Shepherd Drive to the east and the Union Pacific Railroad to the west. The River Oaks Property Owners’ (ROPO) Association maintains a neighborhood security force with 24-hour patrols and handles permanent maintenance, monitors deed-restriction compliance, maintains the esplanades and parks and contracts for trash-collection services. While the median home has an appraised value of more than $1 million, property values range to more than $20 million.

— UPTOWN/GALLERIA
Known as the Galleria/Post Oak area and Houston’s Urban Village, Uptown Houston has grown as the city has expanded, developing this unique urban environment outside of downtown yet centrally located. Weaving a thriving business district, acclaimed retail stores, luxury hotels, condominium and apartment towers with prestigious residential neighborhoods amid natural beauty, Uptown boasts some of Houston’s most exclusive neighborhoods, such as Broad Oaks, Pine Shadows, Indian Trail and Pine Hollow; prestigious townhome developments, such as Indian Circle, Post Oak Timbers and Sage on the Bayou; patio-home communities, such as Arborway, Indian Bayou, West Oaks and Homewood; and the stately high-rise, Four Leaf Towers.
