About/History:
Academy Sports + Outdoors traces its beginning to 1938 when founder Max Gochman opened the Academy Tire Shop in San Antonio, Texas. After a few years, Max began selling military surplus in his shop. He moved his business, then called Academy Super Surplus, to Austin, Texas in 1956 and expanded the operation to four stores.

In 1973, Max’s son, Arthur Gochman, began developing similar stores in Houston, Texas. Arthur opened six Academy Super Surplus stores and the business continued to grow. In the early 1980’s, Academy added sports and outdoors items to its assortment of products and evolved into a full-line sporting goods store. By 1990, Academy Sports + Outdoors grew to include 28 stores across Texas.

Today, Academy Sports + Outdoors is one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, operating over 100 stores across the southeastern United States. Our stores offer the sports and outdoors enthusiast a broad selection of equipment, apparel, and footwear at everyday low prices. Our formula of low prices and a large selection has allowed the company to become a leader in the sporting goods industry. Academy Sports + Outdoors ranks among the highest in sales per store and highest sales per square foot of any other sporting goods retailer in the country, and has experienced a compounded annual sales growth rate of 17% over the past ten years. Academy Sports + Outdoors' Chairman and CEO is David Gochman and President is Rodney Faldyn. We are now over 13,000 associates strong.

401(k) Plan

This plan allows you to save for retirement through pre-tax payroll deductions with a generous employer match, which is immediately vested. You are eligible to enroll in this plan on the first day of the calendar quarter following completion of six months of employment with 500 hours of service. The plan offers more than ten investment options for you to design a balanced portfolio. Distribution may be made upon termination of employment in the form of a roll-over to another plan or a lump-sum payment made directly to you.

Bereavement Leave

Full-time associates may have two days off with pay to attend the local funeral of an immediate family member. For a non-local funeral (requiring travel of more than 250 miles in one direction), the associate may have three days off with pay. Part-time associates may have two days off without pay and will be given the opportunity to make up the time lost.

Business Travel Accident Coverage

Academy provides this coverage to all full-time associates at no cost. This plan will provide a benefit for an associate’s survivor in the event of a fatal accident while away from his usual place of employment, on company business.

Continuing Education Benefit

This benefit is available to active full-time and part-time associates who have worked at least six months of continuous full-time or part-time service and whose work performance is in good standing. Academy will reimburse associates for approved courses (job related computer/technical classes and English, Spanish and sign language).

Dental Insurance

Academy’s dental plan allows you to use any dentist of your choice and covers Preventive Care, Basic Services and Major Services up to an annual maximum. Orthodontic Services are available to children and adults with a life-time maximum. The premium you pay for this plan will depend on whether you enroll for single or family coverage.

Life Insurance

Academy offers both Basic Life Insurance provided at no cost to full-time associates and Supplemental Life Insurance that the associate may purchase for himself and his eligible dependents on a payroll deduction basis. Both plans include accidental death and dismemberment coverage.

Medical Insurance

Academy offers comprehensive medical coverage with a choice of two PPO plans, which include wellness and pharmacy benefits. The premium you pay depends on the plan you select and whether you enroll for single or family coverage.

Merchandise Discount

After the first week of employment you may shop at Academy with a 15% to 25% discount on most items.

Paid Holidays

All full-time associates are eligible for six days of holiday pay.

Pre-tax Premium Plan

Medical, dental and vision care premiums may be paid on a pre-tax basis, saving you FICA and income taxes.

Sick Leave

Full-time associates earn sick time that may be used after six months of employment.

Supplemental Long Term Medical Leave Plan

After completion of a Short Term Medical Leave, salaried associates are eligible to apply for Supplemental Long Term Medical Leave. Hourly associates are eligible to purchase this coverage.

Supplemental Short Term Medical Leave Plan

Salaried associates are eligible to apply for Supplemental Short Term Medical Leave after six months of continuous salaried employment. If approved, this benefit will pay a percentage of the associate’s salary after the first week of disability to a maximum of 180 days.

Tuition Reimbursement

The reimbursement program is available on a semester basis to all active Academy associates enrolled in undergraduate college courses at an accredited college/university. Eligible full-time and part-time associates may be reimbursed for tuition and mandatory fees, up to specified limits.

Vacation

Full-time and part-time associates are eligible for vacation pay based on employment status, position, date of hire, and hours worked.

Vision Care

The Vision Care plan is offered through a network of providers. The plan covers an annual eye exam and you may purchase lenses and frames from the plan’s selection or contacts each year at a great discount. The premium you pay will depend on whether you enroll for single or family coverage.
